Through
the years Nigel and Margaret have travelled to many parts of Europe and
Scandinavia researching folk dance, music, costumes and customs. From
their travels two beautiful books were published, Denmark and The
Netherlands, both still available. Apart from these books Margaret
devised and published the most useful series of workbooks on Denmark,
Finland, Portugal and Norway, which are designed for children and
students undertaking National examinations. Nigel's book, Folk Dance of
Europe, which is the most valuable book on folk dance, and their series
of traditional folk dances all began from National.
For ten years, every summer, they travelled to Denmark to run a Summer dance school. It was a tremendous success and they introduced Ballet and dance for the first time to a small village community. They had the backing of the whole village and were supported by the educational organisation. Never a person to sit back, but always full of ideas, she formed a performing group, Northern Lights, which has toured in Austria, France, Switzerland and Spain. The group present dances from the British Isles as well as a programme of Modern and Tap. For the dancers, all drawn from the schools, it gives them an insight into touring and performing and they gain a tremendous amount from the experience. The size of the stages differ, sometimes in the open air, sometimes twice a day, and the programme can change at the last moment depending on the stage surface. The shows are always beautifully dressed and immaculately presented. In 2003 Northern Lights return to Majorca, unfurl the Union Jack, and for the first time enter the very large folk dance festival presenting English folk dances Mwy ar/More at http://www.istd.org/national/facultynews/june2003/margaretdixon-phillip.html |
